Eden Vets October Newsletter

Please try to prevent your dog from eating conkers or acorns this autumn. Both can cause gastrointestinal upsets (vomiting and diarrhoea) and can be fatal if eaten in large quantities. Due to their size and shape, there’s also high risk of obstruction, where they get stuck in the oesophagus or intestines.

October is also National Eye Health awareness month

As part of national ‘Eye Awareness Month’ and with the recent launch of our NEW ophthalmology service over the next few weeks we will be raising awareness about common eye conditions your pets may suffer from.

Please follow our Facebook page for more information about your dog’s eye health

If you wish to see Lucy, our ophthalmologist please don’t hesitate to get in contact with a member of our team.

As part of our internal referral service at Eden Vets we are please to welcome Humberto (or Bert) as he likes to be called to the team.

Dr. Humberto Abreu graduated from the University of Porto, Portugal, in 2004. He spent the first eight years of his career practicing in his home country before relocating to the UK to further develop his expertise in small animal surgery.

During his time in the UK, Dr. Abreu worked in a busy small animal referral hospital in Scotland under the mentorship of experienced surgical specialists, where he earned his RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery (CertSAS). He subsequently held clinical roles in several leading orthopaedic referral centres across the UK, honing his skills in both orthopaedic and neurosurgery.

In August 2025, Dr. Abreu joined Eden Vet Referrals. His clinical interests focus on stifle pathology and fracture management, though he is experienced in all aspects of orthopaedic and neurosurgical cases. Dr. Abreu is known for his calm, compassionate approach and commitment to delivering high standards of care to both patients and their owners.

Eden Vets Star Patient of the Month – Our star patient this month is the beautiful Keith

This is Keith. He was referred to our feline medicine team after swallowing a needle and thread. The needle posed a risk of damaging his small intestines if it passed through and the referring vet wanted it to be removed via gastroscopy (passing a camera in to stomach) to avoid a possible surgery.

Fortunately, our feline vet, Laura, was able to remove the needle and thread and Keith could return home later the same evening.
He was a very brave and lucky boy!
