The dangers of obesity in pets
A new study by the Royal Veterinary Collage (RVC) has revealed the scale of the overweight epidemic in dogs in the UK, with 1 in 14 dogs recorded by their vets as overweight each year. (Published by the RVC in march 2021) The study also found that certain breeds were more prone to weight gain, including Pugs, Beagles, Golden and Labrador Retrievers and English Springer Spaniels.
Obesity can have severe health risks for our pets.
Obese dogs could have a shorter life span, reduced quality of life and higher risks of some important and often life changing conditions such as, arthritis, breathing problems, heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer. Often obese dogs also suffer with anal gland issues.

Obese cats suffer with similar problems to dogs such as reduced life span, reduced quality of life, arthritis, diabetes and breathing problems but they are also more prone to bladder problems, liver disease and certain types of cancer.

The descale and polish package will include:
– General anaesthetic
– Scale and polish of all teeth
– Post operative dental pack including tips and advice on teeth brushing and a dental chew
YOU WILL HAVE A SAVING OF £50
The extraction dental package will include:
– The above
– Full mouth x-rays
– Up to 1 hour of extractions as necessary
– Pain relief during the dental and to go home with
– A post operative check with a registered veterinary nurse to check healing and discuss preventative dental care.
YOU WILL HAVE A SAVING OF £100
If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please call reception on 01270 439289 to book a free dental nurse appointment where we will assess your pets’ teeth and provide an estimate for the dental.
We can only perform 2 dental procedures per day, so please be aware appointments will be limited and allocated on a ‘first come first serve’ basis.
The offer is only available to NEW bookings.
See our website for more information on our Dentistry>>
* A staged dental will be required where the extraction time exceeds 1 hour. This is where the dental procedure is split into two separate anaesthetics.
Eden Vets Star Patient of the Month
This week’s star patient is the handsome, cheeky chap; Frankie.
Frankie was referred to our internal medicine team as an emergency when he acutely developed hemoptysis (coughing up blood).
Investigations diagnosed him with primary immune mediated thrombocytopenia (IMTP).
This is an immune-mediated condition whereby the patient’s platelets are destroyed. Platelets are a crucial part of a dog’s coagulation system and without them they are unable to form blood clots. When the platelet count in the bloodstream reaches critically low levels spontaneous bleeding can occur, and in Frankie’s case he was sadly bleeding into his lungs.
Frankie underwent a canine platelet concentrate transfusion – a relatively new treatment available through the Pet Blood Bank in the UK.
Platelet Concentrate provides lifesaving haemostasis, allowing time for the other medications required to control the disease to take effect. Frankie also received an intravenous injection of a drug called Vincristine, which helps increase the circulating platelet numbers, and was started on immunosuppressive doses of steroids.
Frankie was hospitalised with us for 6 days, during which time he responded brilliantly to his treatment. The bleeding on his lungs was controlled and his platelet levels returned to normal. He will remain on medication for the next 4-6 months, during which time we will monitor his progress very closely.
Whilst the possibility of relapse with this condition remains, Frankie’s prognosis at this point looks excellent and we are so pleased to see him doing so well.
