Eden Vets July Newsletter
Otitis Externa
This month we are going to discuss one of the most underestimated and common conditions we see in practice – otitis externa! Aka external ear infections!
Main take home – there is ALWAYS an underlying cause!
Prompt diagnostics, investigation and treatment is always the preferred route as the patient will end up with an ‘end stage’, chronically infected and painful ear which would most likely lead to extensive surgery.
These are the root triggers that initiate inflammation or alter the ear canal environment:
• Allergic skin disease
* Parasitic infections (ear mites)
• Foreign bodies (Grass awns, foxtails)
• Keratinization disorders (Seborrhea)
• Autoimmune diseases
• Neoplasia or polyps (Especially in older animals or cats (e.g., nasopharyngeal polyps))
We have an experienced dermatology team available along with extensive equipment and resources to be able to help your patients and pets. Don’t delay, ask for referral today!

Meet a member of the Eden Vets team:
Katie Glover RVN CertAVN
Katie qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2019 before achieving a certificate in Advanced veterinary nursing in 2022. She has been part of the Eden team for 4 years of which for most part she worked as a night nurse before recently joining the day medical nursing team.

Katie is also our dedicated Oncology nurse and has a passion for supporting patients and their owners whilst having chemotherapy treatment. She is also part of the Inpatient care team.
She checks in with phone calls and emails regularly and see patients when they come in for their routine tests. She can provide advice for any queries and support at a time when things can seem tough and uncertain. She cares deeply for these patients, and we know from owner feedback how useful her support has been. Hopefully most of you will never have a patient with cancer undergoing chemotherapy but know that if you do, we will be with you every step of the way.

Eden Vets Star Patient of the Month
Our star patients are Hattie and Mr Darcy
This week’s star patient post focuses on our Chemotherapy service at Eden.
We would like to celebrate two very important patients and their dedicated owners for completing their chemotherapy treatment.
Chemotherapy is the use of cytotoxic drugs to destroy cancer cells with the aim to; improve patient’s quality of life, achieve partial or complete tumour control and increase patient’s survival time. The chemotherapy protocols are intense and require full commitment from owners.
Whilst undergoing chemotherapy treatment pets and owners and greeted by the dedicated team at each appointment and supported through every single milestone. Which is why when owners are invited to ring the bell it is often greeted with cheers, claps and sometimes happy tears.
Hattie has completed 12 months of treatment for lymphoma; she is now in remission and enjoying attention outside of the hospital.
Mr Darcy has completed 6 months of treatment for lymphoma, he is also in remission and is a popular patient amongst the team, he often bounces through the door for cuddles and gravy bones.
Ringing the bell to celebrate the end of chemotherapy treatment is a day that feels so far away for owners just starting the process, but rest assured that day is soon here and were delighted to share that moment with you.
